Project Type: Custom Spec Home

This home includes an in-law apartment over the garage, generous main floor living spaces along a south facing window wall that looks out to a water feature, pool, and extensive gardens beyond. Meant to evoke the timeless understatement of Texas hill country estates, the material palette includes a standing seam metal roof, plaster exterior walls, and off-white limestone accents. Large gridded windows are used throughout to connect the house to the yard and views.. Steel and wood trellis elements add detail and provide shaded outdoor living spaces. The project has a net zero energy efficiency, and makes extensive use of natural materials inside and out.
Project Type: Mid-Century Modern Restoration
Original Design by Art Everett 1967
Restoration Design 2017, Completion 2019

The original Art Everett design included a loft in the main volume of the great room which made the space dark and cramped. Removing the loft created soaring vaulted ceilings and filled the space with natural light. The exterior of the home, including all window sizes and locations, were preserved with an eye toward future historic preservation. The interior was completely renovated with all new finishes, room layouts, and energy efficiency upgrades. Working with Kate Van Sluyter of Kimball Modern, the clients chose an updated mid-century modern materials palette including black walnut floors, terrazzo slabs in the master bath, and solid color kitchen cabinetry. Custom steel and glass doors conceal a pantry in the kitchen and provide additional natural light in the master bedroom and bath.
Historic ADU status within Boulder County is currently being pursued which will enable construction of a second home on the property. Conceptual design imagery of that home is listed as Bellevue on this website.

An 1896 historic shingle style home on Mapelton Hill is renovated with an entirely new 10 foot basement, great room addition, and master bedroom conversion of a cantilevered sleeping porch. This project had extensive review by the City of Boulder Landmarks Board and is a successful example of adapting architecturally significant historic homes to serve modern family needs. The exterior is preserved intact, while the interior creates a modern and open floor plan incorporating historic trim and millwork details.

Project Type: Mid-Century Modern Restoration
Original Design by Charles Haertling 1972
Restoration Design 2014, Completion 2015
The original Haertling design included an indoor swimming pool in the center of the home, which is still visible in the basement and has been converted to storage. The project included a complete gut of the existing interior, redesign of the major spaces, upgraded thermal envelope, new PassiveHouse level windows, entirely new finishes and a redesigned garden by Karla Dakin. Connection to the garden was enhanced with a new multi-slide door and linear deck. The kitchen was placed at the center of the great room with views to the garden, and the master suite was completely re-organized with a walk-in closet and new luxury bath. A minimalist approach was taken including no baseboard or door trim, engineered wood floors throughout (including bathrooms and kitchen), and a new bent steel staircase connecting the main and upper floors.

This horse property northeast of Boulder strikes a balance between modern detailing and rural vernacular forms. A 12 foot deep overhang shelters the great room window wall, which has distant southern views to the Flatirons. The single level floor plan includes 3 bedrooms, a trussed double height great room, and attached garage. The exterior is clad in weathered vertical siding and corrugated metal roofing, while the interior includes hickory floors, rift sawn white out cabinets, and earth-toned natural stone and ceramics.

Renovation of an existing “slump block” Spanish style home into a sprawling 6,000 sf modern ranch with extensive views to the Flatirons and Continental Divide. The great room features a 16 foot wide sliding door system which opens the room onto a covered patio with 25 ft wide retractable screens that create a large screened-in porch. An indoor pool was converted to an outdoor one with a north facing courtyard, while a detached garage and studio create a u-shaped entry courtyard facing south. Exterior materials include stucco, clear fir siding, and wood window walls. The interior is finished with bluestone tile, tropical hardwood engineered floors, and rift sawn white oak cabinetry.
